It's not an easy task for Mercedes Schlapp to serve as the White House's communications strategic advisor. She is faced with a myriad of challenges, including as being the President's communications director, and serves as his communication director. Schlapp, however, has never lost focus on her role. She works closely in conjunction with White House political affairs and the legislative team and policy shops as well as the larger communications team to oversee the rollout of policies. So far, her focus has been on issues like school safety, opioids and infrastructure and trade. Schlapp isn't involved with journalists often in her current position. The issue came up in March when she received a flurry of interest, after it was known that Schlapp would be a potential candidate to fill Hope Hicks's post as director of communication. It hasn't been an easy fight. Allies to Schlapp and Tony Sayegh, another contender for the job, began jousting in the media. Schlapp said that after she learned that the Washington Examiner had published an article that had negative reviews of Sayegh's persona, she phoned Sayegh in a private chat.
